[WIP] cardgun

ok, so i'm just going along my everyday routine like anyone else, and i remember seeing a mythbusters episode where they tested to see if a thrown playing card could kill someone, then i ot a great idea; make a gun taht does it for you!

to give it a history and tie it into the halo universe:

running out of funds, the UNSC began research into alternative weaponry. when you're fighting a war for the survival of a species - and losing - you tend to run out of cash fast. to save money on ammunition, they created a device that would A) use the millions of pieces of scrap metal created from constant fighting instead of wasting it and B) provide forces with a cheap, easy to use, alternate weapon for close to medium range infantry combat.

ok, so it's not practical in the least, but it's more of a UT-style weapon, where it just needs to kill something in an exotic fashion ;)

it works by firing thin 'cards' of metal at high speeds via use of an electric motor. the cylindrical part of the body houses a wheel directly attached to the motor. the wheel has one portion of it bulging out slightly and made of high-friction rubber, so as to rotate the wheel at high speeds, thus making the rubber grip on it's edge rotate at high speeds.

the 'cards' are fud upwards towards the wheel by a simple box magazine. when a card arrives in the chamber, the continuously rotating wheel eventually brings the rubber section to the card at high speeds, thus flinging the card out the barrel.

the ammunition is the most brilliant part of all - it's junk! almost any piece of metal can be used, as long as it is thin enough and not oddly shaped. the pieces of metal that can't immediately be fired can easily be machined for use in the weapon. however, because using just a bunch of old bent-around steel is unacceptable, the UNSC does take the more promising scraps and specially machines them, very straight, sharpened edges, and heat-tempered.

anyways, enough of my description, how about some pictures?

the odd thing in front of the cylinder (which houses the firing wheel) is for a backup box battery (like a 9-volt). simply pop one in, wait for it to deplete (because it charges the internal battery) and pop it out, replace it, and repeat until internal battery and backup battery are both sufficiently charged

as you can tell, i'm in the progress of making a grip underneath the battery box, but smoothing groups don't really want to behave.... also, that's not the finished handle at the end. i'm still not sure what i'm going to do back there... but anyways, if anyone can give me tips on making a good handle, i'd appreciate it.

and finally, a wireframe. as you can see, i'm not the most conservative, but it looks decent (i guess, lol) and it's a learning experience.

Its a bit blocky on each end. But the circle part looks good.

Looks great. Much more detail needed to make it look believable. But since it is a WIP, not too shabby.

Lol, cool idea. Mythbusters is awesome. :P

the cylindrical part was easy because i started from a chamfer cylinder.

also, i'm currently at 1236 triangles, 600 polygons.

and yes, i'll add more detail before i finish it, but what should it be? give me some advice on what details to put into this so i can make this better, because right now it's pretty bland.

Hrm. It seems flat. like just flat. It would look better if it was less planar.

It looks like you just made a a spline and extruded it, then added in a chamfered cylinder. Put some more shape into it, and I see lots of poly wastage. Like the cylinder, doesn't need that many sides, and that many polies to make it rounded. Put parts a gun would need, like maybe a safety switch and a fire selector on it. You're getting smoothing errors becuase you're trying to put smoothing groups on too square of edges. Try making the barrel look like it's a seperate peice maybe. Possibly extrude inwards that part directly across from the back handle. Aimer and trigger would be good too. And a port to put the peices of metal into, like near where the cylinder meets the gun on the back. You're corners don't need that many polies to be round, you don't need to chamfer them all either. Anyways those are my suggestions.

I like the idea alot! The model just needs to be less blocky IMO.

thanks. i'll work on it a bit more, like working on the front grip and the handle and the magazine and projectiles.

similar, i just started with a chamfer cylinder, extruded some polies a bit, did some chamfering, etc.

and i know it could use more shape, but i'm not sure how to do so, just bevel some of the polies on the side? or is there more to it than that?

also, as this is the WIP, i'm going to get the main body down, then add details like safety, trigger, fire selector, ciggarette lighter, etc.

can you explain some about the smoothing groups errors? i'm getting it on the front grip, and i'm sure i'm approaching smoothing groups wrong.

also, can you point out what you mean by the part directly across from the back handle? the part directly between the back handle and the cylinder?

meh, i've given up on it. partly just wanted to move on, and partly because i was sick/tired of modeling it. i think i'll move on to a real gun...

That what I do with all my models, a lot I don't even save.
