Importing to 3DS max?

Im having a problem inporting the models, that I have extracted from HMTv3, into 3DS max 8. I try and import them and that works fine but the models have bits missing or you can see right through it but when you pan the camera round there is some of the faces?
Sorry if there is already a topic on this (I couldnt find it)

you need to select all the vertices and weld them at .001 and then unify the normals. this method works with most of the models.

How do you unify the normals?
