Importing with Blender

I model with GMax, but I want some coolio renders so I downloaded Blender. I CANNOT figure out how it works. So anyways, I export my .max files as .(quake 3), open them in a converter, then covert them so I can import them into Blender for a nice render. BUT THE LAYOUT IS SO MESSED UP, HOW DO I IMPORT!? There isn't an 'important' or 'open' button anywhere!
