My questions about using Gmax for mapping...

First...

I've been going through the beginners tut on map making and have gotten to the section on Tool. This is where problems show up if I made any before. I've run into problems with Shaders I think. I wonder if it's lnked to this:

In the tutorial, the guy talks about going back into edit mesh after already applying an Unwrap UVW. I watch his screen and it doesn't display any messages when he does it. When I do it, it warns me that doing this could have adverse effects. I originally ignored it assuming that I should do that. I found out that it did have adverse effects. Totally undid all my work with the Unwrap UVW.

Can you describe what I should do here? I tried applying a second edit mesh to the stack and it seemed to go fine but was that right? I had the same issue in 3dsmax.
