If it's anything like 3ds max just click file - Summary info and find the place where it has "Faces:"

And by skinning tut, do you mean stuff like UVW mapping, or making good looking textures?

i dunno if this works in gmax max but press 7. in max it pops up yellow lettering that has the poly count or vertice count.

Like CKY2K said, select the model in any viewport and press '7.' I have a tutorial that can be of some help. Click here for a uvw tutorial you will need before you actually make the skin for the model. Tutorialized has a bunch of nice tutorials that are very easy to understand, so check it out to see if there is anything there that will be of help.
