How could I make good bitmaps?

Hi.
I've seen Kirk's video tutorials but the bitmap he used for his level and
the one I made for mine are very simple.
I'd like to make very nice quality ones like I've seen many people have.
Does anyone have a tutorial or can anyone help me with this problem?
I currently have Adobe Photoshop7.0, Adobe Photopshop Elements, and Paintshop Pro 6. If there is a better software\program I can use please tell me.
