I did this with a tut i found when googleing. What do you guys think for my 1st model that took like 20 minutes to do? I'm happy with it. At least i'm getting into 3ds Max now.
i bet that if u added a ratracer material that was about 50% transparent and meshsmoothed a bit it would look like some sort of jewel...
all u did was extrude every face, but that's one of the most useful tools in editable poly modeling, keep with it and try using the cut and quickslice tools with editable polys as opposed to just extrusion and see what you can get
ASPARTAME: in your diet soda and artificial sweeteners. also, it's obviously completely safe. it's not like it will cause tumors or anything. >.>
always remember: guilty until proven innocent
Usually if you want to do a face extrude on a sphere, you use a geosphere, there are plenty of things you can do to it to deform it.
Try going into the modifier pannel, finding FDD 4x4x4, click on it. Then right click on your sphere and click on control points, then you can move each point and it will simply have a soft selection effect on the mesh, and you can get some awesome effects with it.
Also try, instead of just extruding, beveling and do it a few times.
The render is not bad, however it could be easily improved by adding somthing like a HDRI to the scene, or populating the scene with other objects so that it is more interesting and your mesh has somthing that it can reflect.
