OI say have one hand hold the tube going down, and the other coming out of the side, then make some sort of mechanism to sheet the 'power cell'

so the masterchief has to hold it with two hands one on side and one on bottom...

johnjohn, take my advice and use the spline tool to draw the outline of the gun, then extrude it. You can end up with this.
