Photoshop question

Okay, Ive been watching the "making ground textures" video tutorial (which is exceptionally bad quality so u cant see anything) and I was wondering if u can create an alpha map in photoshop and if u can, could someone post a tutorial or a link to a tutorial. Thanks.

Just an alpha channel?

1. Go to window > channels
2. Make a new channel
3. You have created an alpha channel.

Thanks but I was looking for something like the video tut. Creating a ground texture, but either a better quality video or some screen shots and an explaination.
