Finish a new model/mesh? Got something you're working on? Finish a new map? Here's the place to post it for feedback and whatnot.

hmm
sounds like a pain
i like my method more
you take a cylinder shape it the way you want the cutou t to look like delete the ends, flip teh object insider out. place it where you want it to be at. delete faces of the model off around it. attach it and then attach it to the frame by making new faces.

boolean is an evil modifier. not only that, but tool hates it. stay away from it at all costs.

i have gotten pretty good results with boolean, but it is evil and i reckon go with spline modelling all the way.

spline just really allows you to create your models with as much presicion as you decide, especially with weapons you can get all the little curves and bits you want instead of havening restrictions with editable mesh, or screwed texture co-ord as with boolean. its really in just experimentng with different styles of modelling and finding which is best for you.
