This isn't it quite

I am doing this like a base in kirks tutorial. (this would be videos 5 and 6, mostly 6)
In short, I attached the object, deleted the faces underdeath, remade them and detached the object. I re-apply my UV map to the faces I delete and recreated and I see what is below.
Kirk's video makes a mention of things getting out of wack but I'm not sure how to fix them. I've tried to high light all the faces and remap the whole thing but it doesn't map correctly. I'm not sure a) which way to fix the problem posted in picture 1, or b) how to do the answer to a.
