help making a ground for level

ok, i did do kirks4 HEK tutorials and i really didnt understand what he was all doing with the PSP program, btw kirks4 your tutorials were awesome i still woudnt know jack about 3dsmax and the hek. but anyways i do need help on making ground i have ideas on what i want i just dont know what this alpha and stuff is. someone please help me thanks.

P.S. i have PSP and photoshop 7

well there is not much to explain, just watch it and click what he clicks and do what he says.
