First question is about The Gimp: I tried injecting skins I edited with the Gimp (in this case cybord.dds), but whenever I did from far away it would appear black instead of whatever color it was before. When someone told me I needed 8 mipmaps, I found out Gimp made 9. So I deleted one and saved it, and it messed up my HUD. Anyone have this problem? Or better yet, can solve it?
Second question is about Gmax: I know its supposed to be almost exactly like 3ds Max, but one thing that I can't work around is that the materials don't show up in the 3d View. I did exactly what the HEK tutorial that came with the HEK told me to (it worked when I had the 3ds trial) but it doesn't show up. This really bothers me since I need that to see where I should put things, etc.

1. You have a MipMap error. Open up Gimp and browse for your original cyborg skin. Open it up, and what it asks if you want to display MipMaps, say no. Mipmaps are smaller versions of the original, and they show the skin from a farther distance away. Skinning only the original will apply the skin to all of its MipMaps, so you will see the skin no matter what distance from it you are. It will not turn black.
2. I really have no experience using 3ds Max or Gmax, but I have a suggestion that might work. In 3ds, to apply an image to a plane, you click a blue and white cube. Try searching for something like that, and it may apply the image for you. I doubt it, but it's worth a try.
