Don't have the same tools, but still want to make maps

I can't quite get halo CE map making, but it's not my fault, I can't find any tutorials that will teach me how to model and skin maps right. I could sue the rest of the HEK tutorials, but I have crappy tools, and I couldn't get crap done before my trials ran out!
Please help me if you can help me make maps using: The GIMP, GMax, and HEK.
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I really need this answered.
