For your first model, that's pretty good. My first model was a mech I drew up, and didn't even draw so it would be physically possible to model! I made the thing out of planes! I created a plane, moved some vertices then moved it into position, and attached it. Pretty lame.
. You could see right through the cracks! But, that was a year ago. I know alot more now, than I did then.

Good bye.

Plane modeling has only recently become more popular, and technically plane modeling is polygon modeling, people who use plane modeling get good curves and good detail, but it takes them a while to make it.
Ive been doing spline and surface modeling for almost every model I have done for 3 years now, and I find that I am best at that, but it takes alot of time to understand how it works.
Polygon modeling is what most people use, which is plane and box modeling, and if you ever try to copy a perspective view of somthing to a model, you will probably find box modeling/cylinder modeling alot easier as your base shape will be 3d, so you move vertecies accordingly.
There are lots of other techniques to making a model, some people prefer to do detail straight off, so while they are working they will do each bit very slowly to get the detail right. Other people like to make the base model and then go back and add detail, thats what I like to do.
Ok, your model is ok for a first, if you get the bits which are in wood and give them a box mapping it will make them look better. Also add some more detail to it, maybe some seems on it in some places.

What I did, I really wouldn't call modeling. I would call it... crap. I don't really know the thinking behind what I did, because I don't remember. What I did was create a plane, rotate/move it into position, and click the attach button and attach it to model that way. It was hard, took to long, and I really had no clue what I was doing.
I used to believe for a brief certain point, that the makers of bunige had to model the entire ring, and model every last detail. I thought that if you could get up on top of the map, you could roam around the entire ring!
Like I said, I was crazy. When you don't know jack squat, you turn crazy.
When I first got my computer, I just searched used search engines for years looking for stuff, and wasted the computer's 'life'. By the time I got done with that, and knew something, the computer was almost to old to run any new games like the ones that came out 2 years ago. I kept going to yahoo and searching for things like 'video game maker' and never found anything, because I just wanted to model, or create a game. One day, I came across this site, and thought wth is this?
There was a picture of a cat with a eye patch on up in the corner! I thought it was a clan site! So I just went on in my search for a 'video game maker' in which I could make a game. One day I found this british thing called 'the 3d game maker' which cost me 40 bucks, and was a total piece of crap! I thought Iwould let me model my models, instead it just let me place some stupid models around a weird map with crappy scenery in it.
I probably shouldn't be telling you guys this, because you will think I'm an idiot, but I always say my 2c, and I have alot of 2c, to say.
One day, I come across the site for gmax, I downloaded it (56k modem! UGH! >_<) and messed around with it. I tried over and over to make a model. I kept using the line tool and drawing the shape of the model in over head view, and had no clue what I was doing (what I was doing was suprisingly close to what actual spline modeling was, except I didn't turn it into a polygonal model, and just made it out of lines).
Then, after a while of fooling around with it, I came across this site, and decided to check it out. I stayed for months, checking the forums, and exploring. I made an account a while back, and never did anything with it. Then I just faded away and went to another site as soon as I found it. After I got bored with the other site, I came back (it was yet another modding site, only for the game Freelancer) and read some tutorials, then I tried to make maps for Halo CE, soon I had worked out all the kinks, and could fix any modeling error max could throw at me! Which is my claim to expert modeling. I don't claim to be good at making models look good, I claim to be able to make em completely sealed, and error free. Although I always think my models look pretty cool. I checked back on my Cavalier file, and realized it needed some detailing. Not sure whether I will do anything to it though. Lately I've been gaming, modding, and modeling bits here and there. I been fooling around with spark edit and HMT (HMT I learned basic meta swap modding a long time ago) and trying to put some of my AI ideas together. Nothing stupid or crazy, just something workable and fun. I hardly model and when I do, I become bored and just go play Halo.
And so, the complete computer history of Gavel himself. Lol!
That other ship I tol you guy about? I worked on it, but now I haven't touched it, and have completely forgotten about it. One of these days I will finish it.
Oh the crazy things I have done... this site has taught me so much! I would still be screwing around in search engines if it wasn't for this site! I had no friends who knew anything about comptuers, so I had to learn everything myself. Which is why my history is so crazy.
