Nyxem Virus

Post by Ketchup_Bomb »

This section is entitled misc, and tech questions, so I thought that this would be the best place to post this:
[quote="Silicon.com"]Antivirus companies are at odds over the severity of a time-bomb virus which is set to go off on 3 February. The so-called Nyxem virus has so far infected 300,000 computers around the world, most of which are outside the UK.
We're less concerned about it being a digital doomsday. Businesses are certainly protected from this. But I have no doubt some home users will be affected.

-- Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant, Sophos

Mikko Hypponen, head of antivirus research for F-Secure, said: "It's going to be a pretty big problem in Turkey, Peru and Italy but not much of a problem in the UK. There are hundreds of thousands of computers that have been affected.

"There've been 15,000 infected in the US

Not saying its no big threat, but I dont think you should get all hopped up everytime a new virus gets released. A hacker friend of mine said to back up stuff but dont get too antsy.

DMP - Oracle files
DOC - Word document
MDB - Microsoft Access
MDE - Microsoft Access/Office
PDF - Adobe Acrobat
PPS - PowerPoint slideshow
PPT - PowerPoint
PSD - Photoshop
RAR - Compressed archive
XLS - Excel spreadsheet
ZIP - Compressed file

Those are the affected file types so you may want to back up stuff before midnight.

I was informed that JPGs as well as various other images would also be affected.

That's the fix, you need to have that, that's from the Windows Update.

Yes, but I'm not paying the return fee.

Um, was this virus supposed to do something?
