Tural, sadly people don't just want to donate. They see no point in helping. He wants to take the site, and be known as the "savior" He has no intentions of changing it etc. People don't want to donate, since there just donators. Add a medal for them, custom something. People want to be put out from the rest a simple donate won't do it for them.Tural wrote:Then donate the money each month.xXxCocoFangxXx wrote:I'll buy the site. Only the people who are truly dedicated to the site and have a title or something to live for will donate. (EX. Staff, Prev. Staff)
I'm not trying to diss you or anything but face reality its life, that someone won't give anything that casually or free of charge unless they get something back. Why do you think charities offer a drawing for donating? a book? something?
An upgrade that provides just a little extra will increase chance of donations, simple as that. By yourself just giving 6 words, "Then donate the money each month." I'm sorry but its true, that he will need some serious mentality to give up money for no real purpose. I will give money to a charity for nothing, but a halo site? No. There should be at least a little star next to our name. And if you give me a response along the lines of someone shouldn't need something to donate money. I beg to differ. I would give money for free (not alot) to people in Real Life. This is an online site, you can take the effort or someone can to add something for those donators. Theres plently of mods, and don't tell me simplicity is better because Donators want something extra.
Why don't you let him speak for himself? Nobody was addressing you, and I don't think you're qualified to respond for him, or anyone else. All you ever do, all the time, is find a way to constantly whine about additions to the site, upgrading the site, etc. You need to just stop it. Nobody wants to hear you go on and on about how you think the little forum mods are necessary. It's tedious and pointless, so stop warping every discussion into that. That is completely irrelevant to this topic in every way, and you are twisting an on-topic point in order to make it fit your off-topic suggestions. Having a title or status icon is irrelevant to anything I said, in every way. You pulled an abstract point in order to, again, go on about how something needs to be added to the site. Keep it out of here. If you don't want to donate because you don't get a stupid little star, don't. Nobody's making you donate, so stop trying to say "Well, if you would just give me something, I would donate, because I don't care enough to do it because I'm a good person."
tl;dr: I wasn't talking to you. If I wanted your input, I would address you. I am addressing CocoFang. You are not him. You do not answer for him.
From now on, if you do not have direct input relating to a possible solution to the site's problem, do not post.

Gosh, it's been a while since I've been here.
Anyway, I'm a little confused. Grenadiac said that the server costs about $240 a month to rent and with Google's new policy, he is missing out on bout 25% of the money he would usually make. He also said he'd need to shell out $150 a month to keep it going. Somehow the numbers don't add up...
I'll be completely honest when I say that Halomods was never my favorite site, but it was there for me when I needed it. It'd be a shame to see it go down because of such a little problem. In my opinion, the only logical solution is to do something about the advertising. That is, because shutting down the site or moving to a free or cheap host are both completely out of the question. Then there's always donations, but the fact of the matter is that people are selfish. I'm guessing you'd get a good deal of money in the first couple of months, but you can't rely on them forever. Moving to another server is fairly plausible, but in order to save a good deal of money from the monthly bill, you'd probably have to cut the quality of the server quite a bit.
Which pretty much leads to the idea that changing the advertising is really the only way to go, unless you have someone serious enough to take on the responsibility of hosting the site long term, which past experiences tell me is not usually successful. There are so many ad programs out there that can really boost your revenue. Someone here did mention TribalFusion. I've never used it, but I do know that they do have pretty high criteria for applying and because of this, publishers are able to get more money than they would be able to on other sites. I've also noticed that a lot of these ads are significantly more annoying than Google's Text Ads.
I think that in-text ads, such as the ones that Vibrant Media and Kontera use could pay quite a bit. I use Kontera myself and although I don't use it in conjunction with AdSense, I have heard from friends that do that say it pays almost the same as AdSense, which could almost double your revenue. Yes, I know they are annoying, but who says they have to be for everyone? Why not enable them for guests only, or people with less than say ten posts. I mean, let's be honest here, guests and members with only a few posts are really the only ones that click on ads.
My two cents. Also, congrats if you actually read all that.

I, for one, do not welcome any new overlords.
If Gren isn't in charge of this place, close it down. Simple as.
With regards to donations, the whole idea of a donation is to "donate" e.g. you shouldn't expect anything in return. This isn't a torrent site.
Is purging existing posts/inactive members etc not a good idea, to reduce bandwidth/disk space/database size? There is a lot of junk here. I'd be willing to help in any way I can with regards to tedious jobs like that, unfortunately though I can't really help financially.

Why is everyone here so against someone buying the site. Does it really matter who owns it, Tural he said he was going to keep things as they are, so what's so bad about him owning it as opposed to it being owned by Grenadiac. People are over-reacting to something that should be very simple.
Grenadiac can't afford to keep the site going. He needs a permenant solution, not for people to donate every month. And if I were CocoFang, I wouldn't donate a single cent without owning the site. You're telling him to pay a donation each month, but let Grenadiac keep the site, If he's paying for the site it should be his, it's common sense. Would you pay a monthly bill on a car if you didn't drive it? No, thats stupid, it's the same logic here.
And to the people saying that they don't want anyone else in charge but Grenadiac, nobody said you had to stay. You're more then welcome to leave if you dont like how things are done, personally I'd like to see the site maintained, even if it is someone else running it. Who cares who's running the site, it's already been said that things won't change, why does it matter who owns it.
If he's paying for the site, let him get recognition for it. You make it out that he's some horrible person because he wants recognition for doing something good, and yet you're not decent enough to give him that.

I for one wouldn't want the site run by somebody who decided to pay for the site to say they owned it and was it's "savior". Especially when they wanted the title and some star/emblem/recognition. It seems kind of low...
Also, DeadHamster. As stated above, it's a DONATION. Not a transaction. If you are to donate, you should NOT expect something in return besides maybe a honorable mention if anything...
Plus, if Halomods were to get handed over to somebody able to pay for expenses it would need be somebody well known, trustworthy, and over all has displayed some remote ability to be responsible. The last thing we would need is somebody to take over, forget about the place or just not pay attention to it, then have it go downhill from there.

Someone with a reliable server who has proven themselves to be capable of running a large site is going to be far, far ahead of someone who doesn't even visit coming back offering to completely buy out the site so they can be the hero. Considering there are about 5 legitimate, plausible offers, I don't think his is even important. Why are we arguing about it?

I was assuming that since this topic is back from being locked, and it has not been locked again, that the issue has yet to be resolved, meaning that nobody has been chosen to take on the financial burden of the site.
Therefore, if nobody has yet been chosen and if somebody is willing to, I would hope that that somebody wouldn't be shot down for the reasons given.

And I unlocked it, not someone who has the ability to decide if its resolved or whatever, so your assumption is incorrect.

If all your going for is being a savior, then chances are that goal would still be accomplished. If you donated $150 every month to keep this site running, whether or not your goal is to get recognition, chances are your going to get recognized in some way.xXxCocoFangxXx wrote:Isn't that what we need?
