That happened to my friend, actually. Bought the game on like the 28th, and only realized that the card had an Expiration date on the 30th.

Oh, and Waverunner, yes, I pay Annually. Why? Fully-Integrated Voice Chat (in every game), required Broadband (something PC still needs to figure out), Friends and Clan lists, Cross-game messaging and invitations, Automatic Patching, in-game Content Downloaders, constant monitoring for Cheaters and bugs, 24-hour support, and superior Netcode.

I think I can sacrifice the meager amount of $50 a year for that.

Uhh, plus whatever it is to get an xbox, I think theyre $200 now, and $50 for the game, and the XBL starter kit is $70 for the year or $40 for 3 months depending on what you get, and an extra controller if you want one is $25 :?

In total it will cost you $320 for an xbox, halo 2, a year of xbl and two months of xbl, and a xbl headset.

Yah, If you really think about it, that's really not half bad.
You might want to wait for Xbox 2 however, if it is backward compatible that is.
