HaloMods "Classic" Read-only Archive

Well this isn't exactly my first Sig, but i took a huge break from photoshop, halo, and all of that kind of stuff, and lately a friend had gotten me back into it. I decided i wanted to try to make a Sig so I look at my first to Sig posts and this would be considered my third Sig.
This Sig didn't take me along time, and I would like all the feedback I can get before when I made sigs they were totally lousy, and now I believe this is better than those, but still not good...
All feedback would be appreciated

(We try not to upload signatures as attachments to Halomods and instead use either ImageShack or TinyPic as online hosting for images. I already hosted it for you so no worries, but try to do this in the future. )

First off, what are you using? Photoshop? GIMP?
I don't know GIMP very well so I can only comment on elements I know how to do in Photoshop.

The first thing I would mention is the background. It looks as if you brushed a background, then zoomed in on it; losing definition and gaining blurriness.
I would head over to deviantART to browse around their brush collections. Or, if you would rather it all come in a pack, 22pixels has a great Photoshop pack that I download on fresh installs of Photoshop to get it started. Using those brushes will not only add cleaner, more defined backgrounds, but will also create a more interesting background pattern, depending on which style you wish to follow.

The second thing I would mention is the lack of color. There are reasons for not adding color to pieces, but on this one I don't see why you left it blank. Master Chief has some good green you could have combined with the Elite's white to create a coloring pattern.

Try starting anew with different brushes and adding color, then show us your improvements.

I'm gonna start with what I am pleased with.
For one, there's color! Huzzah. It is also off-placed (Elite's color on Chief's side and vice versa). Good.
You also took that color and used it on the text. Doing this will add to the overall feel and theme of the sig. (Well, most of the time.)
I'm also really glad you took our advice and tried it. Being teachable is one of the easiest ways of improving... at anything.

What still bugs me is the background. It is different, but it's still really bland. Let me link you to that 22pixels pack, or "Flock", I was talking about. Download that and simply install. (Instructions.)
This comes with lots of goodies but the ones we're most interested in are the fonts and brushes.
Once downloaded, I would again start over using an abstract brush set. Abstract brushes seem to be the easiest to work with and yield the most aesthetically pleasing results.
I would also mention that using a white background with black brushes is typically the way to begin. However, using white brushes on a black background can look better using certain colors.
Anyways, with that background done, I would then look into what you're using as renders. So far these have been cutouts from (what looks like) relatively low screen shots. Renders are what people look at for the most part, so they need to look sharp. I would suggest looking around for some rendering sites that allow you to use their galleries to browse around. I don't have a particular favorite, so if anyone cares to volunteer what they like, feel free.

I think that's a good next step: fixing the blandness of the background, and getting some better renders.
