Master Chief doesn't play paintball!

okay, i made this yesterday, (it ended up in my sig too) with the intention of well, a bloodied up master chief of sorts. unfortunately, covenant blood looks an awful lot like paintballs. so instead of a MC splattered in covenant blood, dexter style, you get... this. an MC that just got back from the local paintball arena.

how might i go about fixing this? any ideas?

Brighter blood or maybe add like a brute or something in the background.

whats wrong with paintball?

"After Master Chief saves the human race form complete domination, he settles down for a relaxing game of paintball."

lol jk, maybe make it more purple-y, and more splatty instead of blobby

i made it a bit brighter and glowyish, (like a grunt) but... i don't know. it's still not quite right.

guysullivan, that's a good idea. i'll try it.

I would try making the "blood" darker.

I'm not going to talk much about the background since you've been speaking more of the paint on his face, but I must mention it's kinda ugly.
Are you using Gimp? I'll cut you slack if you are, if not, download Photoshop. Work on fixing that if you'd like to raise its appeal.
'Nuff said.

Try running trails of blood down his helmet where the bigger patches are. Smear it down like his face is a vertical slip-n-slide.
I also agree the blood should be darker, but also glow-y. See: Neon-ish.

Good idea. Keep working on it; I'd like to see where you go from here.

i unfortunately won't have time to work on it more until like, thursday, but...

the background. when i changed my name to red, i forgot to change the background. it's an easy fix. i was thinkin brown perhaps... i don't know. and the fractals were just kinda a "hey, that looks cool, i think i'll put a master chief on top of it!" moment. i don't know if that's what you were talking about, but i'm not terribly attached to it. it's just what i happened to make at the time.

i'm using photoshop cs3 actually... if i did it in gimp it would look... even worse.

hm... smearing... that's a fantastic idea! i hadn't thought of that. thanks.

i tried making it glowy/neon-ish, and that's what i got. i'm pretty baffled as to how to do that though. any ideas there?

The paint in the shadows of his mask, need to be darker. So it doesn't look like it's just floating over his mask.

Lol, it' not paint.

I think the pastel blue you're using now looks more like paint than the original. If you see on the floor in the picture here, it's darker and more watery looking.

Yes it is; you're looking at the wrong spot.

Quick tutorial I made, not that great, not sure if it creates a effect you want, but here it is.
First open up your pic and make a new layer on top.
Now brush your covenant splatters. I used the color 3a85af
Right click the layer and hit blending options.
Use these settings.
Inner Glow:
blending: normal
Color: Darker than the original. I used 1d3b4b
Outer Glow:
Blending: Normal
Color, around the same thing as inner glow. I used 3d5461
Size: 2
Color overlay: You can change the color here again if you want. I changed mine to 4e9cbc for fun.
Make a new layer under the splatter.
Click the splatter layer and hit ctrl+E (Merge down)
Change the merged layer to overlay in the blending mode drop down.
Play around with a soft eraser brush at different opacity erasing parts you don't like and changing the darkness of things.

wow crytic, that is pretty. Where did you find that pic? Is nice. I think the blood itself is pretty transparent though. It needs an opaqueness boost. Thanks though, I think I'll try that when I get back to my computer.

@ketchup- I changed the backgrond to purple. It looks way better.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
*runs into thread screaming*

after two windows reinstalls, a frustrating photoshop cs4, a crazy new idea for this whole project, an overclocking nightmare, AND a windows 7 beta install, here i am, with this picture that i uploaded to photobucket ages ago.

you may notice that i smeared the paint like a motherfucker and changed the colors a bit, and also changed the background to purple.

but, i started a new one a while back. i'm not half assing it this time. i hand made splatters with paint, (real paint!) i took a perfect screenshot from a cinimatic in halo 3, (very high res) and added in a face which likely none of you will recognize. (it's an inside joke of sorts, i just needed a face to show through the cracks) i'll be finishing it as soon as i get photoshop back up and running.

AND by the way, this website now looks fabulous.

just sayin.

one i dont think he would be losing at paintball lol :) and i think he is cut out kinda poorly but great idea make the paint more realistic maybe and the background to me is pretty akward im thinkin maybe a speedball court/obsticle behind him or something :)

love the idea though

It looks too 2d. It doesn't look like the paint goes around the contours of his helmet. It would like fine it it were a 2D cardboarc cut out, but our chief is 3D. Agreed Crytic's is nice, although the paint isn't that visible really. It needs to be fairly opaque, but not completely.

I like your second attempt, it doesn't look very realistic, but it suits the underlying image. I don't particularily like Crytics as it appears to be more like discoloration than paint.
