Sure, you can stick anything you want to onto, into, or whatever-to your xbox and it be legal. However, the BIOS necessary to MOD your Xbox FILES uses Microsoft sourcecode. And to top the cake with icing - the OS that runs in the background and allows your XBOX to run (like Windows/Linux/Unix/DOS runs your PC) is also made with microsoft sourcecode - another no-no. The only reason we're not mailed a huge fine in the mail is A) It's not practical - they'd spend more money on court fees and lawyers than they would get out of us. B) It'd probably irritate the general public and cause a harsh drop in sales. C) They resolve the issue by not allowing modded content on their servers and 'everyone' is happy.
Of course, there's also a whole slew of legal issues once you start modding the files........
Personally - If I spend X many hundreds of hours developing a game for people to play - and they want to strip it down and edit it and add to it - I'd be more than thrilled - those people are learning a little about what it takes to make a game, and are potentially my successors. I'd feel honored to be part of creating a game that people love to play in both its default configuration, and one that they like to manipulate into their own. But we can't have people running around in tournaments with unlimited ammo and super-powerful rocket launchers.
I'm curious about this mod - please make a .ppf of some kind, soon - since they don't have enough space on their hard drive (you all really don't need to hide that with "legal" issues - you can just say "we can't have a million 50+ megabyte files going to our servers") and then there's the equation: Bits/second= Bandwidth / (downloads X time to download)................... as the denominator increases, the numerator decreases, wich further increases the denominator...................................... enough math.
