Motherboard Exchange

I was wondering if lets say you have this really boring motherboard with only like 1 PCIe slot and you want to upgrade to one that has 3, then could switch it without anything major happening?

1. Your Operating System would be total f**ked, the motherboard is the main part, if you are using an OS higher than Windows 98 good luck with that.
I would just re-install, but backup my files on the old board then swap and install new OS then dump your stuff back on the new OS.
2. PSU may need to be upgraded
3. Driver Faults with Vista (less likely)
Thats pretty much it.

Make sure it matches the slot type of your CPU and supports it wattage. Also make sure it conforms with your current RAM type and power supply connections.
Oh and make sure you don't statically discharge anything.
If you give me your full system specs I will be able to pick out a motherboard that would work right for you.

That means touch the case every singe time you are about to touch ANY part of the computer. I learned that the hard way, I turned around to get a harddrive for a split second and fried the motherboard......

hey tucker,
heres my PC, if i were to switch motherboards then i'd probably just move stuff to an external hard drive first.
Yes i know its an Acer, but my parents were afraid that i might screw up and lose a computer forever

Probably wanna upgrade the psu to 450 or 500 for future purposes, and possibly the motherboard.

Hmmm, I would not recommend replacing the motherboard in a store bought computer because they often have custom form factors, if your willing to buy a new case then you will be fine.
This motherboard will fit your specs, but I cant say for certain if it is compliant with your case without actually seeing it, on the inside.

That's a nice board, but if you have a higher budget I can find you something nicer.

I would never use asrock, not a really good company with bad success rates. Gigabyte is the way to go.

I wouldn't have picked it if it had bad reviews. It's fine for his uses especially if he's on a budget.

Try MSI I have had about 3 of their boards, they are fast and they have low heat. *about 2-3 fans on board inlcuding CPU* But mainly they run AMD so if your not a "fan" of them dont bother.

I'll probably get that Mobo and PSU, but I already have 4 gigs of ram so i don't need more, plus if im getting more ram i've always wanted a 4 gig card (single) so yea.
with taxes and handling your mobo and PSU comes to $205, thanks
now i just need a job

@Crytic; I realized that mobo only has one PCI express x16 slot, which will not do.

Well since you stated your price range to about 200 bucks, I recommend the K9A2 Platinum. $150 bucks I believe, has a nice chipset, it supports a combined 32 lanes of PCI-E CF bandwidth and is very reliable, loaded with advanced BIOS features and supports all of the latest AMD CPU's.
The previous motherboard I recommended is fine, but if you want more, the K9A2 has it. =]
