Memory

So i'm looking for some technical help with my computer. I've been looking into getting more RAM for it. I've decided on a product and everything but i'm not totally sure on how everything works. My computer right now is running (x2) 512 modules. My computer's motherboard supports up to 4 slots. Now, if I were to buy (x2) 1gb modules...i'm assuming my computer nor XP will have any trouble utilizing these. (am I correct?). On the other hand, I could purchase a (x1) 2gb module for a little lower of a price but it's only one chip and i'm not sure if I could use the (x2) 512 modules along with the single 2gb chip.
So which would be more ideal? I'm banking more on the (x2) 1gb modules working and the other not. But that's why i'm asking you guys because i'm sure somebody around here has enough PC knowledge to help. Thanks.

It would help if you provide what motherboard and processor youre using, that way we can decide what memory speed you should get...also I would suggest getting either 2 or 4 sticks to utilize ddr speeds.

Forget the 2x512 sticks as their only going to slow you down.
Get two sticks of DDR2 PC2-667 and run them in dual channel, effective doubling the bandwidth of your memory [ala 4gb single channel].
If it exists over there check PC world, they have DDR2 pc2-667 for i would assume $19.99 seeing as the numbers don't really change just the currency symbol [their £19.99 here] try and get some PNY brand sticks as thats what i stuck with for months and never had any issues them their hardware.

Is that maximum capacity for 1 slot or all combined, because you could already be at max capacity.

And if the maximum capacity is only for one slot, then getting the 2gb chip would be useless.

I have four slots max on my motherboard. I use two slots for the 512 that it came with. My computer can use up to 4gb ram I found out. And from what i've been reading my computer seems to support only the dual channel modules. I don't think it could do just the one. I remember my buddy gave me a single module 1gb stick and my computer would just crash every now and again. So I think i'm just going to go with the two chips. Then i'll have 3gb ram which will do me just fine.

get two of those so you can get to 4gb. your only going to use 3.7gb unless you use 64 bit but its still worth it.
60 bux for 4gb of ram is a great deal... even 2gb is good.

Thank you very much. I'm going to purchase two sets. It's $10 more than what I was going to spend on a 2gb chip anyways. Thank you very much. Saved me some cash!
