Yeah. Can anyone suggest who the best manufacturer is and where I can get a 4 gig stick o RAM?

i'm not sure of any sticks themselves since i haven't bothered shopping for any that large, but some good brands are kingston, OCZ, and corsair. most anything off newegg should be fine though.

Check wether your comp runs off of DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 because they aren't compatible with each other. I made the mistake of not checking that

I recommend Corsair. If you don't know how to look up your RAM follow the link above, else google CPU-z and take a look at your current memory or go to the motherboard manufacturers' website.

Why a single stick? Two sticks of 2GB's is faster than a single stick whether it run in dual channel or not.

As you can see two sticks is cheaper than a single stick, and its much faster. I could get into technicality as to why but I would probably loose most of you.
