Audio and video stop working after a while

I've had this issue for a while now, no idea what's causing it.

Basically, when I have my computer on for a long period of time (a few hours), eventually the sound on my computer just stops. My songs will not play, and video's will stop after a few seconds of playback (no sound when playing either). The only remedy seems to just restart my computer, which is rather annoying.

Any ideas?

It may be overheating? I used to have a laptop and when left on for a long period of time it wouldn't play video's very well at all. It was annoying.

No, I don't think it has to do with that. It runs fairly cool.
