CPU of higher FSB than motherboard?

Quick question...when you put a CPU with a higher Frontside Bus speed than what the motherboard is at, and the CPU ends up not working, would that indicate damage to the processor, or is it simply just not wanting to work?

What do you mean by "what the motherboard is at" with?

The CPU says it works with a higher FSB than what the motherboard has.

You may need to downclock your cpu's fsb. Care to give us the specs of your cpu / motherboard combo? Since you can't just throw a cpu into any motherboard you choose

I was always under the impression CPU bus speeds were locked and could not be changed...
All good and well having a motherboard with a higher compatible bus speed but a slower speed could damage the bus controller as it simply was not designed to be recieving data at such a speed.

I'm not looking to put it in my motherboard, I'm just wondering if putting a high FSB CPU into a lower FSB motherboard would cause any lasting damage to it...

I wouldn't rely on answers given here.. sign up over at tomshardware etc somewhere like that where there are hardware expects, you'd get a much better answer!
