effects of HDD speed

i am buying a new computer and would like to know how influencial it is to the overall speed of the computer to have 7200 rpm as opposed to 5400 rpm

Well, a hard drive with more Rotations Per Minute has a faster rate of accessing file, opening them, and copying them. It's basically a hard-drive with extra performance.

5400rpm: Great for storage, but limited speed
7200rpm: Great for speed, but limited storage

If you plan on downloading a lot and you need a lot of space, I'd recommend 5200rpm. if you want speed, but not as much storage, get a 7200rpm. 7200rpm hard-drives are more expensive though. I recommend 5400rpm.
