Problems with connecting to xbox with compaq

I bought a compaq with XP 2 years ago (a presario v6000 or something like that) and It used to be able to connect to the xbox via a direct cable.
I installed Vista.
Then I Reinstalled Vista.
Then I reinstalled Vista again because of a fatal error.
Then I got another fatal error and downgraded to XP.
Then I reinstalled Vista.
Then I reinstalled Vista again.
That's where I left off.
But now when I plug the ethernt cable from the xbox to the pc, It most likely would work if the cable was detected, (at least in my opinion) but now the cable isn't detected as being plugged in. The ethernet port doesn't even have those glowing lights go on. The really weird thing......the ethernet WILL work when connecting to the internet. :/ Any ideas?
