I'm looking into getting a new computer monitor that I can use for both my laptop and my xbox 360. However, it would be mainly for the xbox and the laptop functionality is just a side thought. My question is; is it worth the extra money to get a 20-27 inch computer monitor that would work with both my laptop and my xbox or should I just buy a new TV (20-27 inches again)? My TV right now is only 480i which is non xbox compatible. Would the VGA cable for the xbox make it high def or would it still be standard definition?

I like TV Monitor. I'm getting one soon. Its awesome to have a bigger monitor, but at the same time use it as a TV.

VGA can go way higher than any TV out there. A 17' Monitor can go already to 760i (1024x760 if you ever wondered what 760i means, it's always the height).

Don't know about your budget but get a big Monitor...

If I were you I would get a 20-27" TV with a VGA plug and HDMI so you can have both hooked up at the same time. Plus if it has both, HDMI will look a lot better than VGA.

Most LCD monitors have multiple inputs. And, look for DVI too, it's about the same as HDMI, if not better.

Same but your computer would obviously have to have a DVI slot. Unless you got a monitor with VGA and DVI, then you could just get a HDMI to DVI plug.

They sell DVI-VGA adapters. And most newer graphics cards have one, if not two, DVI slots. (The 8800 I was thinking about getting had two.)

6800 had 1 VGA 1 DVI + 1 Adapter...
7 Series and up have no VGA 2 DVI + 2 Adapters...

Don't forget about tv vs monitor longevity. Assuming you buy a quality tv, it will almost certainly outlive a good monitor.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! One other question though. Does the xbox 360 VGA cable support HDTV or does it output at standard definition?

If you buy a TV then it should have a HDMI port. So if your Xbox has one too then you can just hook your Xbox though it and the computer through a VGA slot if the TV has it.

I would suggest a monitor because of the insane quality vs. price they have, especially CRTs (although i'm out of the loop with LCD monitors).

for example, i've got a huge >20" CRT monitor i'm typing this on now that's running at 1600x1200. when my cousin visits with his 360 every now and then, he plugs into it just fine and the image is great. i'm not sure what resolution he's running it on from his 360, but it sure does look fine.

Now LCD monitors will put out better resolution and picture than any Cathode Ray Tube monitor because they have just gotten a lot better over the years.

Good thing I'm taking chemistry this year or I wouldn't of understood half of what you said . But yea, your best bet is to get a LCD computer monitor. That's what I do, but it's for my computer and my Xbox only. I have a Samsung 226BW.

Right now I'm using my Samsung syncmaster 712n LCD moniter for xbox, It's quality is perfect and it's probably a lot cheaper than most LCD tv sets.
