Is there any way to use an iPod on Windows, without using iTunes, and without paying for some 3rd party add-on for WMP?

After doing some research, I found that the program Vpod should do the trick for you.

Not enough research:
IMPORTANT: vPod Doesn't Work With iTunes 7.3+ iPods
With many of the recent versions of the iPod firmware, which iTunes automatically installs for you, vPod will no longer work with most iPods. This is especially the case if you have used iTunes 7.3 with your iPod.
I am working on a new version of vPod that supports all new iPods and firmwares but my time is limited and I cannot say when it will be released. Check back now and then.
If you're going to install a 3rd party program anyway, just go with iTunes...nobody will force you to play your audio with it, and it'd work perfectly if all you want to do is sync your music. There's a preference in iTunes (Edit -> Preferenes -> Advanced tab -> General tab) that says "Copy files to iTunes music folder" something something. Disable this, and while you're at it, the checkbox to make iTunes the default audio player (if you didn't during setup), and it'll make for a good sync-only app. Then, just drag your whole music folder onto the iTunes library, and it'll weed out your audio files and put them in.

I made a app a while back, not sure if it will work with this new firmware or w/e but I know it worked on my 30 gig video. let me know if you wanna try it out im sure I can make a few adjustments to make it play instead of rip the songs :P

I didn't necessarily want a third-party app, but I assumed there was some sort of WMP support, but all I've found are 3rd party plugins that cost money. I guess I'd try out your app Anthony, because I'm pretty sure this iPod is older than that firmware.

Anyway, I just think it's stupid that there's no plugin support for WMP or other media players and that the ONLY way to get music and stuff onto an iPod is with iTunes.

Well the iPod I thought was for my brother for Christmas was just given to me instead because he found his old MP3 player and got a Juke phone. >_>

So...I'm still looking for a way to get music on an iPod w/o iTunes I guess. <_<

EDIT: I'm not sure what kind of iPod it is, but it's somewhat new (used). My brother says its an iPod video, but I dunno. :\
EDIT2: It's a fifth generation iPod Video. If anyone knows how I can get mp3 files and videos on it WITHOUT iTunes, I will <3 you if you tell me. >_>

I still have that thing. Haven't used it in forever but you should definitely edit the source to allow odd characters such as periods, question marks, and exclamations.

@ G.I.R. I thought windows media player 11 had a sync option for portable media players. Not sure if it will work with the ipod but I noticed it the other day...

Dunno if this will work, but it works backwards too.

Open the iPod in My Computer.

Then Show Hidden folders

Then Find where The MP3 Files are. They will not have the Names of the tracks themselves, and will be in a shitload of different folders within the one folder.

Copy from the iPod onto folder in Computer.

Like I Said, I don't know if this process would work the other way, say copying Music onto your iPod through this method. I don't have an iPod to try it on.

An Easier way to do it is, (IF you don't want to save the stuff on it, or already cleared it out with the method above) is to do a Quick Reformat and set it to FAT32. Use an older firmware then use VPod and there you go. You can find older firmware at iPod Modding Sites like the one for iPod Linux. Look for something around 2/-/06 or older, but still within the Generation.

I still don't get what's so bad about using iTunes just to sync your songs, without it duplicating them and making unnecessary space on your HD get used up. ;/

But Cuda's method sounds like it would work, and I'm sure there should be some other third party apps around to do it.

Apparently I need to set it up with iTunes or something because I'm missing a file in the hidden folder called "iTunesDB."

Reformat it set a quick format to FAT 32 and get an old firmware.
