Keeps disconnecting from Xbox LIVE + xbox to Xbox Live

when i connect to a game to other players, for example, Halo 3, somewhere around where i am about to play after it loads their names, or is loading their names, or is starting the game, or somewhere around there, the players all just dissapear and it says network difficulties, and i have to either restart search or be forced to wait for the game to load and say i won, which is very annoying.
i cannot connect my xbox to xbox live. i have it hooked up and everything, i have my account set up. what i do is(after im done with halo 3 online) turn the xbox on, hook up the wires to the xbox, correctly, make sure the setting on the xbox are the same as the xbox 360, which works, and see if it works. it fails the ip address, or sometimes the cables connection. i cannot figure out this problem. my dad gets the same halo 3 problem, THE PROBLEM, on his game Flatout, on the PC, too. i have comcast.
EDIT: i think i might know now, but im starting to dought it, since it happens on pc games too. i have halo 3 connected to my pc from a long ways away, so i got this thing that can easily fix that. it comes with two cables and two plugs for the walls. you plug each one near the computer and near the xbox 360/xbox. then you hook up the cables to the inserts of the plugs, and they connect together throught the wires in the walls of the house.one of the lights starts to blink whenver i connect with anyone on xbox live on a game, but i still don't think this is it
