sounds.map is not a valid map file?

Post by OptimusPrime »

Hey, guys. I'm totally new to halo modding and before I got anything done, I was stopped at square one. The first thing I do whenever I get a game is to hack its sound and music files (lovable little useful things) and HMT 3.5 claims that sounds.map is an invalid .map file. This is a big blow for me, can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Well, HMT is mostly right. Sounds.map isn't like other .map files although it does have a certain structure to it. In order to access the data in sounds.map, you'll have to open an actual .map file and go into the relevant snd! tag and import/export from there. Bitmaps.map is the same way but for bitmaps.

OK well what i've done is open A10 (Pillar of Autumn?) and I've gone to Batch Extract and checked extract sounds. Will this do what I want it to? give me most sounds i'll need to get from the game?

Honestly couldn't tell you. I know how the maps work and most of HMT, HHT but I don't use them (on a mac) so don't know the specifics.

Um, you're being noobish about this. The 'Batch Extract' function is used for map rebuilding, not to extract bitmaps or sounds. Try experimenting a little before asking questions, you'll learn a lot more that way.
Also, don't expect modding Halo to be like hacking any other game.

And another thing, welcome to Halomods!
For anybody still wondering where FTD has gone, here it is.

OK so I got all of the OGG sounds and converted them into MP3 format sound. It all sounds great. However, the WAV format sounds are neither recognized as WAVs nor are they playable on ANY I reiterate ANY player at all except for eRightsoft Super which isn't convenient because it's a converter not a media player. Conversions have been unsuccessful for some reason. Can anyone shed light on why I'm having this problem?

Thanks for that post! I now know that the codec for Halo is ADCPM. I was converting it to ADCPM, so no changes were made and it was still unplayable, so now I have to convert it to little-endian codecs instead. Thanks a lot.
