Ok, my sisters birthday party is friday night and I got her one of the new iPods. Today, I was going to put music on it for her, but I hit a huge snag...
After I turned on the computer and everything had booted up, I plugged it in. As soon as I plugged it in, my computer slowed down to nothing and it took 3 minutes for the "ipod connected, eject before you disconnect" text to show up on the ipod. I then got messages from the toolbar (bottom right hand of computer screen) that there was a USB device attached but not recognized and that windows could not open it. I also got messages saying that the device had malfunctioned and might not work properly. I opened up the Safely Remove Hardware tool to eject the ipod but the ipod wasn't even on the list to remove. I then restarted the computer. However, on restart the computer never made it past the black screen with the windows xp logo and the bar underneath it. So, I held down the power button for 5 seconds and it turned off. When I turned it back on there was a message saying that Windows had not shut down properly and told me to choose "start windows normally". What really scares me is that when the computer was turned off I unplugged the ipod and it still said "ipod connected, eject before you disconnect".
Please help ASAP. I don't want to have ruinned my sisters birthday present and I most certainly do not want to have ruined our family computer.

It's not ruined...you probably just can't read.

I don't have an iPod but I'm fairly sure it's not Plug & Play. You have to install the drivers (e.g. iTunes I think) first and then connect it as an USB device.

Also if your computer slows down it could be that the iPod charges trough the USB device and if your computer is on the edge of getting enough power this could slow your whole computer down (if your PSU is old or just not powerful enough).

This couldnt be a case of one of the ipods that came with a virus could it?....

I had this the other week. I just held down the Reset button combo, after disconnecting it, and the iPod reset then all was well again.

Alright, I did the reset combo and the ipod is fine now. I also downloaded all the new iTunes stuff, but the same thing happens.

Did you put the install cd in first and run the setup?

Sometimes iPods will be quirky like that and freeze the status for a while. It shouldn't be a major error.

I highly doubt it. This is one of the new iPods, the virus thing was a while ago.

Shouldn't be necessary. Downloading iTunes from the internet (Apple's site) will have everything he'd need.

I'm quite sure it's Plug and Play. It'll be P&P as a hard drive, though. Like I said earlier though...if you have the absolute latest version of iTunes from Apple, that'll contain all you need.

Keep in mind that this is the new iPod shadow. And you do need more than iTunes. The CD comes with a little iPod firmware updater type thing that not only keeps the iPod up to date, but is used to format an ipod to either a Windows computer or a Mac. It is also used to restore the iPod to factory settings should a problem occur. Actually, technically you don't need the cd for this since you can actually download it off apple.com, but the CD helps anyway for when you first buy the iPod. I recommend you make sure you follow the setup on the CD, Antzy. Consider uninstalling iTunes/iPod and reinstalling them altogether from the cd.

iPod updates get downloaded and applied automatically through iTunes, and the iPod gets automatically formatted to whatever filesystem you're running. I don't see why the CD is necessary.

It'd be great to know how it's going though, antszy...is your computer working fine?

Ya, the computer is working fine.
I still have no idea what happened though. There was no install CD that came with the ipod, so that's not the problem. I also tried it both with an old, and new copy of itunes. The ipod itself is fine. I just did the little reset trick to get it back in working order (flip "hold" on and then off, then hold "menu" and click button). I tried this on my moms computer and it worked fine though. Both computers are running basically the same everything though (Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2003, new itunes, etc.). Bottom line is that the computer wasn't affected in the long term and the ipod works perfectly. Thanks for the help though!
