troubles with Linksys WRT54GS Wi-Fi router

well, as my brother's friend comes over to spend the night, i decide to go ahead and re-configure my wifi router to let him get on with his laptop. i set it to an open connection, and set up a MAC address whitelist including both his MAC address and mine. then, things start getting weird. when i go to re-connect to the network, i can't seem to finalize the connection. xp's wifi connection thing just gets to waiting for network, and doesn't get any farther, and never connects. the thing is, while it's trying to connect, i can use the internet fine, but when it stops trying, i lose the connection...

i undid the MAC filter, and set the WPA encryption back up, and the problem seems to be fixed. i've heard of people having problems like this before, and i was wondering if any of you knew why it did this and how to fix it. anyways, i'll ask my networking teacher tommorrow... maybe he'll know.

Just print out the key, its much easier than setting up MAC filters and crap like that. But is WPA better than WEP? Cause I use WEP.

I was having a very similar problem for a while, which is why I've been gone for the past 2-3 weeks.

All I did was uninstall and reinstall my wireless card. It started working fine after I did that.

(Just so you know, I have the exact same router as you do, which is why I'm suggesting this.)

Use WEP way easier then that mac crap.

it depends. personally, i think it would be easy to just use an open network, and add mine and my friend's MAC addresses to it. that way, DSes can get on, aa well as friends, and none of my neighbors are technically savvy enough to find out what MAC addys are accessing my wifi network and masquerade as them.

oh, and WEP is MUCH stronger than WPA. i've seen demonstrations where a WEP network's encryption was brute-forced in less than 5 minutes. WPA, however, is stronger, and i haven't heard of any reports of it being cracked yet.

anyways, i've got the problem narrowed down to it's probably a misconfiguration in the MAC whitelist on my part, or something wrong with how my router puts it to use.
