I'm running an Nvidia geforce 4 ti 4200 and i'm not really satisfied with the framerate i get at 1024x768 in Halo. While inside a building i'm getting 10-30 fps and outside 20-30 fps. I want a consistent 30 while inside or out. Is this possible with just a new video card? and if so what video card has the best bang for my buck.
I'm running a
-2.0 ghz AMD XP
-Geforce 4 ti 4200
-1 gig of ram

Dunno, maybe setting the reslolution a bt lower will help.

Thats the entire point, i want it at a high resolution and maintain a reasonable frame rate.

In multiplayer the framerate is perfectly fine tho...because single player has a lot more stuff in each map

Well, the first thing you can do is get the latest drivers for your card. The Detonator series is the best for games in my opinion, for nVidia based cards.
You can get that at
www.nvidia.com
Considering you only have a gef4, you may be unsatisfied with this answer, but compensating your resolution may be the only thing.
Other things to check are textures. Do you have textures and particles on high? Are you using decals? Lowering or removing these things helps a lot with older cards.
Are you using vsync, you can check under video options. You should try to do constant 30 fps instead.

You could also try adding -use11 or use -use14 to your halo command line. It'll force Halo to use older shader versions that provide better performance, but restrict certain video effects.

All you idiots. Please stop going around trying to tell people that they have to have a 9800 Pro. I run Halo at 1028x700 (whatever numbers are) with medium textures, particles, and decals on. I run this all on a geforce 2 MX 440 (well, I did until I got a new comp). YOU DON'T NEED A DAMNED RADEON 9800 UBERPCWONDEROMGOSH THIS CARD ROXORS.
damnit.
Some people don't even know how to put hardware in. So maybe you should help him with the solution he wants, which is how to tweak his card, not what to go out and BUY.

why don't u shut the fuck up and keep ur big head focused....he said if I had to buy one which one would be the best.....wtf are u thinking....WE know that the RADEON 9800 pro/XT are really good grafix cards....i am sure that everyone in this fourm dosn't give a shit about ur card "experience". he needs something with DX9 compatibillity not DX2.

G2 MX 440 works fine with X9.
Obviously radeon 9800's are fucking great cards. But they come at a fucking huge price.
He doesn't need one to play Halo. If I am correct halo doesn't even fucking use AA and AF.
So shut the fuck up, and go get a 9200 or 9600 . It will run 100-300 dollars less and you will be fine.
