whenever i try to shut down or restart my computer (via start menu), nothing happens. then when i try to open a program, it says it can't because Windows is shutting down. it wouldn't let me open the task manager either. anyone know what's wrong?

kick your PC.

or just manually switch it on and off from the power supply, or from the buttons on the front. Then boot it back up, and retry from start menu.

Okay, first of all, always go to the start menu to turn off your pc. That probably has something to do with it.

You've most likely picked up spyware from all that pr0n, wes. And I'm serious. Some kinds of spyware give you programs that automatically start at your computer's startup. Throughout your time on the computer, the programs go "Not Responding". The computer then can't shut off because it is trying to shut down all the running programs safely. Run your anti-virus software.

Mine use to do something similar to this.
It would take like a minute more then usual to shut down but it would eventually do it.

My advice; listen to Ravnz.

Well, BEEF!!! offered me a good solution a while back and it worked.

If its a spyware problem, sometimes it wont let you access your programlist or your start menu, so Go get Security Task Manager, and start googleing processes. End/quarentine those that are suspicious(Lavasoft and Symantec will give you the best answers).

See if your problem is fixed from there. BUT before you do this, disable System Restore so it doesnt reload the virus/worm/spyware.

And if it is a still a problem buy a couple dvd's or alot of cd-r's/cd-rw's an back up all your stuff and reformat.

Does your Task Manager simply not show up? Or does it say 'Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator.' If it says that, go to Start > Run, type in the following, and click enter;

Code: Select all

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
