If you have Win XP, you can use the Google toolbar untill the next service pack which will patch IE to include a built in popup blocker. If you think that you somehow installed spyware (ex:Gator
), search for a program called "Spybot Search & Destroy".
If the popups are from a program called "Windows Messageing Service", all you have to do is disable the windows service called "Messenger".

Its probably more likely he's talking about Windows Messaging Service popups. To disable the Messenger service on 2k OR XP goto Start>run>services.msc -- Find messenger, goto properties and stop it, then set it to disabled.
If you actually use these messages for communication inside your local network then you can simply block inbound NetBIOS access.
The Messenger service uses UDP ports 135, 137, and 138; TCP ports 135, 139, and 445; and an ephemeral (that is, short-lived) port number greater than 1024.
So if you block those ports from outside acccess, your internal network will function properly, but you won't get more annoying messages from Ad spammers.

I use Mozilla Firefox (Version 8, use to be called Firebird)
But my IE is equipped with Goggole Toolbar, it's cool.
And you probably have Spyware installed on your system.... Get SpyBot Search & Destroy and download the updates for it and scan.

I had the same problem a while ago. Nothing sucked more than getting pop-ups while I was not even logged in on the internet. Personally, if it is really that bad I think its probably ad-ware. Sometimes you can do virus scans for these (Norton checks for these and blocks them as well). Also there is a great pop-up and spyware catcher called Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/). Its a free program so you don't have to worry about paying for it and I think it works better than some of the comercial versions out there. I don't know if that will help, but good luck with your problem...
i got a free program called ad-aware (www.ad-aware.com i think) : it scans ur C drive for that gator stuff and tracking cookies
now i have a problem that might be spyware, but when i type, particularly on my net browser, and most of the time typing on another program while my browser is running, my font goes to caps without the caps lock light on, my font changed completely, sometimes i just hit 1 letter key and some search window pops up and stuff.........
what is that crap?!
