Oh wow, its floating and so is the halo 3 one;
Why would a blade with a massive amount of energy touch its own emmitters, thus damaging itself? Please don't talk about things you haven't researched or fully understand, I know your intentions were benign but you aren't helping anyone.
Tsgfilmwerks, the sword is coming along nicely, but maybe you could add more detail into the handle.

See? I could just stare at that for hours...
How would I go about making this effect?

Oh my bad, I didnt explain the background, In the latest one I rendered, I added HDRI lighting thats why its that color, Its not darker at all, If you over lay both of the pictures the MC's will look exactly the same (except for the visor and specular areas, But thats due to the HDR lighting.) , I just did it for background purposes, Its not meant to be placed in a light scene, Thats why I said focus on the material.
Havne't used max in a long time so don't quote me, but doesn't HRDI lighting involve reflecting some or all of the environment? So by making the background darker you made the entire render darker. The armor doesn't look that good, its too dark and doesn't have the specular to even make it look like metal. Too be honest, it looks like the first batch of materials we made last summer.

It generally reflects it yes, to help the composition process.Darco wrote:Havne't used max in a long time so don't quote me, but doesn't HRDI lighting involve reflecting some or all of the environment? But it can be used to solely illuminate a model.
It's just generally seen to be most acceptable to keep it within context.
Though after re-reading Trulife's post, it makes absolutely no sense.
If it's reflecting the HDRI in only one of the renders, and only one of them was illuminated strictly by an HDRI, then they will not be exactly the same.
In fact, they will be dramatically different.
ex:
Only the illuminating HDR has been changed between the two.
Rendered in Maxwell with physically correct materials.
Titanium Alloy, Polysulfone, Gold, and of course Rubber.
Joseph Staten was kind enough to clarify a few details and elaborate accordingly.
