Hey all

Was just wondering would PIR's resigning aid in Halo Modding?
As due to the recent leak of the Fall Dashboard Update- There have been many attempts to get it to work on Retail consoles.
And some dude (will link in a moment) believes he has found a way to resign PIR's Files. Im not to sure- but here is the link-
Go to UPDATE#8.

Link

And heres the Quote for those that can't be bothered.
Ok so now we possibly have a breakthrough on retail consoles. As you all should know by now the Update Files are all RSA Signed and almost impossible to edit the files. But thanks to a “Team Member”, we might have found a way to “Resign the PIRS Containers”, which is used to validate the Xbox information allowing the install to go through. Give us just a little more time and we should have more information about it and show you if it is successful or not. This update is just to show you all what we are currently working on! Enjoy for now!
-Also i was wondering, aren't the DLC Maps kept in Live/Pirs containers?

:D

Rwar!

DLC is stored in LIVE containers.LIVE is seperate from PIRS. I don't think any Halo 3 files are stored in PIRS containers, so no.

The DLC maps are in LIVE files. And no this won't help because we still have the RSA on .map files.

But themes that came with the system are in Pirs and that will probably be one of its biggest uses XD.

True, but i would love to see tools for custom themes since as far as i know, there are no themes in a con.

How is it even possible for them to sign PIRS if its with a private key Microsoft doesn't ship...

I extremely doubt he signed a PIRS, but I am almost certain I know what he did...

From what I know. Pirs files contain gamerpictures and theme files. Live files contain everything you download off of the market place.

Yeah unless the pirs private key was for some reason included in this update they are not going to be able to resign them. But who knows, it is a beta build there could be some stuff in there that they haven't removed.

I'm hoping the people that have the means to install this update find an exploit :D

...but most gamerpics and themes ARE downloaded off the marketplace (and thus are in LIVE containers). Some are in CON files though, like the ones you unlock in Hexic and Amped, etc.

Obviously he knew of that first bit, it was assumed people would not take the statement as being 100% literal. Game content is in LIVE containers, other downloaded content is in PIRS containers, and content generated by the console (Or a game, and placed on the console) is in a CON container. The reason for game-generated content being placed in CON files is that marketplace content is signed and published by Microsoft. For Microsoft to allow game developers to use those signatures in their software would be a fairly large security lapse.

If you want to be banned. We're not advocating illegally distributed, and leaked, files.

As for this topic as a whole, the answer is no, it is not any help to Halo modding whatsoever. The maps are not stored in PIRS containers, and even if they were, you still could not mod it. You'd still need the unsigned code of the XEX to bypass the map signature check, which you cannot resign, even if you could resign the container they are in. This doesn't apply to Halo modding at all. That being said, this topic is just publication of content we're not supporting being distributed, and doesn't require further discussion, as it has no relevance to Halo modding.
