Red light question.

Alright I know what the ring of death is, the 3 red lights blah blah blah. My question is, can my xbox get the lights then work if I wait awhile, I remember I got the red lights along time ago and didn't use my xbox for like a week then it worked. That was like in February. I got it again today. I was wondering if I got lucky or not before? My xbox only gives me the 3 red lights sometimes, if I shut it off and on it works but freezes in halo 3, I'm letting it sit in the main dashboard for now. And no its not my disk, I don't have 1 single scratch I checked it, its as clean as new.

ok well the reason your 360 started working is because I am assuming the soldier expanded and now that its getting closer to winter the cold didn't help it to much and may be the reason. so this should work for you flawlessly sense you claim that your 360 RRoD doesn't come around often

Otherwise you may want to ship it into Microsoft, If you somehow destroyed your warranty or are confident then this is the method I would recommend if all else fails, it will void your warranty FYI and Microsoft will NOT repair.

It all depends on the error.

Overheating for example...ba-da-bing.

Hardware wise...not so much.

The reason was because all old xboxes are bound to fail eventually.... What I did to my launch box, was to do the x clamp removal look for it on Xbox scene, it works great

No error comes up on the tv it just flashes red out of no where and doesn't show a thing on the tv. How ever, I turned it off and back on and it worked, I found it that nothing happens if I leave it in my dashboard. So I left it in my dashboard for an hour, then played Halo 3, guess what. Halo 3 worked for an hour then froze. I'm assuming Halo 3 is overheating my xbox or something. So I'm just going to leave my xbox off for the rest of the night. If it doesn't work tomorrow, I'll try the towel trick.

I don't really see how a diskdrive could generate enough heat to to do that. If anything heat should fix the soldier bridging problem. Refer to xbox-scene with a error code and description so I can further help you. Oh and by the way the error code will not be displayed visually on a projection device. There is a method in which the red rings will indicate the error via LEDs. Check xbox-scene.

The number one reason for the red rings are over heating. If you want your Xbox to work, take it out of your current area (along with the power cord) and into a well ventilated room. Let air flow through the room. If you let your xbox cool off, it will work. Just make sure to keep your vents clear and you will never have a problem. I keep mine well ventilated, and I've never seen the rings.

I'm going to go with locke over all of your comments. But thanks. Hes right, after I let it sit it worked fine. The only reason this may now be happening is because my xbox is on a cold tile floor which should be good, how ever my cat sleeps out here ALOT! and sometimes next to the xbox, so I think to much dust and maybe cat hair got into the system, I'm going to move it so it hopefully changes the outcome. Thanks everyone.

Not flaming you in anyway but the graphics card is known to overheat too, so it may be possible that halo 3 is asking to much of his 360 for where it is placed.

May want to be careful with that. Dust and hair inside overheating computers is how some fires start. Take a compressed air can and try to blow inside the vents... Which won't get to far so if at all possible you could remove the box top and get all the dust out of there. Dust certainly causes many computers to overheat and I see no reason it would not do the same to a 360.

ya...happened to me once. but my reason was i dropped it.(ok don't give me stupid comments like how the fuck did you drop the 360) try shaking it a bit unplug everything for a few min and try again. but the reason it freezes is cuz it overheats. my cusin's 360 freezes when it over heat. but that's the 2005 series. i got mine in 2006 so can't say for sure.

And find out the full problem with it. From there you should be able to find the correct solution for your problem. Mine was an overheating GPU. I thought it would be best to just send it over to M$ and have them fix it, but apparently there is some problem with my serial number and they "will call me back in a week". Well, that was a week ago...=\

I'm beginning to think I should just go and buy an elite, fix it myself self, and sell it to one of my friends that doesnt have one...

Thanks thats the guide I wanted him to refer to. A lot of people say its overheating but I wouldn't jump to conclusions until you first find out what the issue is.

well the error is the first one, the hardware malfunction. I believe this is happening because my xbox is on a very cold tile floor, and it says it shouldn't be on a cold floor because it can cause bad problems, so I moved it.

Sorry for this double, but it wouldn't of been bumped other wise. The three red lights, 1,3,4 Lit up aren't going away =/. So I just now attempted the towel trick, but instead of using lousy towels. I used a big ass blanket. I let it run without ventilation for about 9 minutes, It definitely started roasting when I heard the system run faster...faster...faster...then so hard I could hear it sitting on my couch! I was like, "oh man, fire hazard soon haha" so I shut it off and now its in the cool down process. Hopefully this works because its the last straw or I'm sending the baby in

Little idea to try if you have a out of warranty 360 with red light.
if at all possible try using a LGA775 CPU heatsink and fan from what i can tell the fittings may just fit in well enough to be effiencient maybe louder but at least you know it wont over heat for a long time.

Even if the towel trick works, you will still have the old heatsink design. I would just send it in. It would have been real easy for me to fix mine myself, but I want the new heatsinks so I won't have anymore problems with it.
