Forge

Post by i.am.terror »

now that you've had a few days to use forge what is your initial reaction? personally i am not too happy with it, the so called "freedom" to redesign the levels doesnt seem to free to me. maybe because i'm used to having the option to do literally whatever i want in modding i've been spoiled. it just seems to me that forge is just like making log mods.

My only gripe is that some things aren't on certain maps...I can understand it as a balance issue...but come on. :?

that is a big problem to me, from what i understood we were going to have free reign over all items that are capable of being placed on a map, not just ones they see fitting to each map.

also why can't i have items float in the air, they all fall straight to the ground. i really wanted to make my own custom maps out of crates and barricades and teleporters.

which brings me to another problem, the teleporters don't have collision so i can't stack anything on top of them, like another teleporter.

I find the lack of scenery selection and weapons to be annoying...Like I'll go one one map and use the giant crates, go on another, and can't use them...
I can't put any weapon I want on certain levels either...ie no flamethrowers on valhalla.

I can understand it with vehicles and some certain scenery objects, but it is kinda frustrating that I have to make a gametype and a map to have everything I want specifically.

Also, the grav lift scenery object can;t be placed on top of other scenery objects...So its at the bottom all the time. So I can't make a stack of boxes with grav lifts on top to get to a higher stack of boxes....If you get it.

It is fun though, and it enjoys eating your time.

i noticed that with the gravity lift too, i spent like 20 minutes making some log moddish stuff with the intent of putting multiple gravity lifts on top to get from area to area.

i also really wanted to be able to have them float so i could use gravity lifts sideways and make those things from sonic the hedgehog.

i guess it's better than no forge. i can't wait until we mod forge and add new items to the list of scenery and objects.

You mean a limit to the number of things you can place? That's more of a memory issue...not much Bungie could have done about that.

The first time I ever used it was in a party with tural, and I loved it, But I think his friend booted me because I kept deleting his items haha :P , Its awesome though, I made a racetrack on snowbound for the mongooses out of those covenant barrels.

I would have liked being able to freeze objects in the air.

You can make stuff float in air, but if someone shoots it or whatever it will fall down.

I think he means a limited number of each item, like only being able to have x amount of crates, y amount of fusion cores, etc.

My only thing about Forge is the general idea behind it. I mean, they claim it, but so much of it reminds me of Spark Edit (Though I haven't actually used Forge, so I'm going off previews). I mean, the edit in real time and such is obviously new, but the general floating Monitor (though not seen in Spark Edit, that was the basic theme) editing and altering the map seems like they had a few Bungie guys checking out their modding community for ideas. I mean, it's not like we can stake claim on something like Spark Edit, but to me it seems like Bungie is getting all the credit for this "new and exciting" idea when technically Halo for the PC already had it.

Well of course they had people checking out the modding communities. It was a good way to find out what we like and what all the hype about modding was about figured it would sell and it obviously worked as we all see and have our copies. They must of thought the community over at HALOMODS has some dam good ideas, what if we threw some of this stuff in halo 3,,, People would love it. Bam now you have forge, alot more detailed maps, bigger MP maps and so forth.....

So you're saying they're taking credit for making a map editor, even though virtually nothing is the same?

Forge edits in the game. To my knowledge, Spark Edit edits the maps, outside of the game.
Forge has a well balanced system of playing, it is designed as a gametype, not solely an editor.
Forge runs in real time. Players play as the map is edited.
Forge has a Monitor as the editor.

I guess having such a completely different system of gameplay and editing means they must have stolen the idea.

Really, the only thing that's the same is that you can spawn objects. I guess Spark Edit would be stealing from every game that had a 3D map editor, eh?

All he's saying is that it may be based off of spark edit. Which is completely logical.

That comment really addresses the point that it "may be based on Spark Edit."

Spark Edit was based off every other game with a map editing kit. That's like saying 3ds Max is a rip off of Maya is a rip off of Cinema 4D because it has a grid and creates primitives.
