I was just rummaging through my H2V cd and noticed in the halo2.exe.cfg file there is this line.

Code: Select all

<enableCrossPlatformSystemLink>false</enableCrossPlatformSystemLink>
I was just wandering what this could mean? Cross platform system link?

It's probably some early dev option that only worked in the early versions of h2v. But it's still worth a try changing and seeing what happens.

Maybe it disables Live while that is on?

So the game didn't start up at all and just told you Live wasn't available? That doesn't make sense, you should be able to play without Live.

As far as I know, speaking from only H2X experience, you can not connect to Live while playing system link. It signs you out. If it is the same for the release of H2V, then it would be trying to sign out and sign in at the same time, at which point a paradox would occur and the universe would be sucked into a black hole.

well if you have a friend playing halo 2 vista and you're on your xbox 360 go to friends list and have him go to custom game and make one then his tag will change and say his game is joinable! (he on pc you on 360) lol well i tried this and what happened is nothing the 360 tried to load the "halo 2 vista" not "halo 2 xbox" game but nothing happened except it tried loading it for hours and hours lol. then i said forget it im done! so maybe someone can try messing with the stuff and unlock a new feature????? cross platform????? or bungie's releasing a cross platform update in many yrs to come, "doubt it tho"

It's not going to happen. For that to work H2X would have to have been designed for something like that. In addition, it would have to have been developed using a 360. On top of that, for it to work, it would have to be set up on the Live service, which it isn't (In relation to the "Joinable" comment).

Doesn't H2V have a LAN feature like HCE?
If so try playing a systemlink game between H2X and H2V.

Try lan, not live.

System Link = LAN.

Yeah, but these guys are describing Live, and friends list, which isn't needed in LAN. So I figured they are talking live, and not lan. I may have misunderstood.

I'm going to have to find this config, and try messing around myself...

I've tried it and I get a similar error as described above. The game says it cannot start the LIVE service and therefore cannot start the game (since you have to sign-in to LIVE, even if it's a Local account, before you can actually play the game) and quits.

The reason for this, I believe, is because of the containing tagset: <liveconfig>. The <crossplatformsystemlink> tag is embedded in this tag, so I think it safe to assume that this is the relation between LIVE and the "system link".

I've been running several scenario's through my head and tried LAN play between an original Xbox and my PC. So far, I've tried using Window's default settings (DHCP) and static IP configuration. The adapter confirms that there is a cable present, but connectivity is limited.

My other thought was actually installing a DHCP server service into Windows and testing again. Still, the real problem here is I don't know how Xbox establishes network connections. If anyone knows about Xbox NIC operation/configuration, let me know and I may be able to work things out (or you may already know how). If not, the only other option I can think of is to somehow create a driver for the computer's NIC card that somehow emulates Xbox NIC operation. Good luck with that.

The standard XBOX connects through a DNS server. If we could manipulate one of our computers or if anyone here owns a server, we can change our DNS's and make them redirect to the server or super PC we may have! But even then we would somehow need the files Live uses to bridge us together and also accept arguments due to internet inactivity and also disconnecting/reconnecting in a network.

In lamen's terms, this isn't happening soon.

And understandably so. Once again, Microsoft's thirst for revenue foils our plans. Still, I can't help but think it odd that the Xbox would perform system-links through a virtual DNS server. If anything, I would say it uses PPTPoE or similar. Regardless, any system can act as a DNS server (the system's DNS resolver cache is converted into a virtual DNS server). The trouble would be configuring the Xbox to accept the computer's IP address as its DNS.

Even so, I've had another thought. Locally connecting two systems with the original Xbox is virtually impossible with conventional software, however through the LIVE service, perfected interconnectivity has been demonstrated. If we could somehow emulate a LIVE server (using the H2 Dedicated Server, perhaps?) attached to the connecting NIC, in theory, you ought to be able have pure, unadulterated data streaming between the systems. Only issue would be integrating a proxy feature to permit valid sign-ins and communications (other than gameplay) with the LIVE service. [I'm not an expert on the service, so I personally dismiss this theory. Ugh...just the thought of all the modifications gives me a headache...]

And then of course, one of you will say, "Hey, n00b, why not just connect to LIVE then?"

Quite so. But for those of us who aren't blessed with broadband internet connectivity *glares*, there is a use for this in local play.

All in all, if what DJ_Gnomey has said is true, I would says cross-platform system-links are, as of now, impossible outside of the LIVE service.

Yeah... but it says cross platform system link... you don't call xbl system link.. And has it worked to play on xbl with people on an xbox? No. Has anyone tried doing system link with a pc and xbox? Not sure about that yet..

I dont have much edumacation on these matters, but I'm just reading what's in front of me.
