Yeah I plan on getting halo 2 vista today, not even sure if it'll run on my computer too good I'm using a built in graphics card (for all I know) that runs halo 1 pc pretty smoothly for the most part and it's not one of those crap built in ones that makes everything dull and with no texture, it looks like a decent graphics card looks so I'm assuming I should be able to play halo 2 vista MODERATLY well.

But anyway.

Where can I get silver membership for windows live? Do I need gold membership to play online? But most importantly where can I register a free silver account?

The only thing a Gold membership can do over a silver member ship is earn Achievements Online and Matchmaking.

When you start up the game for the 1st time, it will ask you to choose a pre-made account, or make a new account. Select that option, and follow the steps. The only thing you need gold for on Halo 2 PC is achievements, match matchmaking, and join some gold-only servers.

all you have to do is go to xbox.com. Earning Achievements Online makes it funner for me but a silver account would be good enough for me if i didnt buy a whole year gold membership for like $40. I could never get matchmaking to work for me it always times out but who cares, i like to pick my own match.

If you have the $50 for a membership, I'd say buy it, if not, then just go silver.
