Yea, basically I detach it a little further then usual. Alot of the times many parts of the weapons are just overly redundant which is especially true in the flamethrower and sniper. I used to have a bunch of ways of detaching weapons but they seemed only to work in the older versions of milkshape but not the newer ones. However, even in misfit, you can separate object by scaling down two consecutive parts of the model to zero such as on the sniper rifle barrel. As for the modeling program, I usually use milkshape but render in anim8or.
Heres what I mean:
this is the sniper barrel, select one part and then scale it in the x,y, and z direction to 0.

It should then look like this. Do the same thing adjacent to the one you just scaled.

It should then look like this. Then you just scale each vertice with the adjoining ends of the barrel by scaling them to zero in the x axis.

Your final result (below) will allow you to completely detach that part without removing any vertices. You can repeat as many times as you want .
